Apple ditching Google Maps?

Apple cause a stir when it launched its new iPhoto app for iOS and appeared to not be using Google Maps to the degree it used to to. It seems that the new mapping data for Photo Journals and slideshows was coming from Apple itself, while Places was still using Google Maps.

The OpenStreetMap Foundation has revealed that Apple is using at least some of its mapping data for these features, and says, “ The OSM data that Apple is using is rather old (start of April 2010) so don’t expect to see your latest and greatest updates on there. It’s also missing the necessary credit to OpenStreetMap’s contributors; we look forward to working with Apple to get that on there.”

Apple has relied on Google to provide maps on its iOS devices since the launch of the iPhone in 2007. It is likely that its desire to move away from Google is due to the tensions between the two companies.
